The 2017 Burton Automotive King of the Box finished off with perfect 4-6 feet surf at Boxy o Sunday August 20th.
A huge crowd braved the cold to witness the best semis and finals ever seen in the history of the event.
Nic Squires & Mitch Dawkings went blow for blow with Squires squeaking past Mitch by 0.10 point to claim the title.
“I have a long history with the wave” said Squires.
“My Nan used to live up here when I was young so I used to sneak down and get tubed as a kid. So I feel like I have an affinity with the wave”.
Mitch Dawkings wooed the crowd with his positioning and deep tube rides, but Squires ballistic backhand was just too strong in the end.
The junior finals was a see-saw affair with local surfer Josh Stretton winning his first crown.
Brent “Red Dawg” Symes won the Legends expression session.
Overall the 2017 KING of the BOX was another resounding success and organisers are already taking about a bigger and better event in 2018. (more…)Posted on
With a powerful SE swell expected for this weekend organizers of the annual Port Stephens Toyota KING of the BOX have called the event officially “ON” for this Saturday (August 20th).
Box beach is one of the venues in Australia and some of the countries best surfers are already hitting the area to prepare for the event.
Contest director Teza McKenna explains the concept.
“Its one of the best wedges in the world on its day & the conditions for this weekend look amazing, it could be our best year yet”.
“It’s a natural amphitheatre with a powerful left hand wedge that is suited to deep tubes and big airs, so it’s an unusual wave that breaks very close to shore and makes both competing and spectating an exceptional experience,” he added.
The event has four divisions:
- Open Men
- Open Women
- Junior Men
- Legends (invites only)
Once again the Country Club Hotel will be the spot to be on the Saturday night of the contest. Robbie O’Brien has compiled another amazing slide show featuring the best shots from Boxy over the last 40+ years. Live music from AQWA will top off an incredible night thats not to be missed!!!

After three successful years of running the “Legends” division as an individual contest, the 2017 KING of the BOX will be staging a “Legends Team Challenge” instead!
This will allow 24 surfers to be involved with 6 surfers in each team.
Four teams will battle it out in a finely balanced teams challenge.
Duration will be 1 hour and each surfer can catch two waves max with the single best score going towards the team tally.
The only rule is that each team MUST finish within the allotted time otherwise a 5 point deduction will be awarded.
This is bound to be great fun and one of the highlights of this years event.
Entry is by invitation only.
