Box Beach, Port Stephens NSW

August 2017

Once again Australia’s best surfers will be hitting Port Stephens in August for the 2017 KING of the BOX surfing contest, and this year will be bigger than ever thanks to some amazing support from the local community.

Last year’s event was awesome and we were blown away by how many locals came down to spectate and support the event”, said event director Teza Mckenna.

It’s really established itself as one of the best boutique events on the Australian circuit, and the wedging nature of the wave draws in surfers from right around the country”, he added.

Last year’s winner Jamie Skillin (Central Coast) has confirmed that he will be back to defend his title against the inform locals like Mitch Dawkins, Kurtis Herman and Luke Michalak.

Unfortunately Box local and WQS campaigner Chris Michalak will be overseas during this years event, chasing valuable points on the World Surf league.

In the Junior men’s division home-grown surfers like Mike Clayton-Brown & Joey Voyzey will be hard to beat on local turf, but they will have their work cut out as some of Australia’s best join the list in 2017.

This year the event has also included a Women’s division and local surfers Elle Clayton-Brown will be one of the favorites along with Newcastle’s Madi Poole, who’s been seen practicing at the infamous wedge over the past few weeks.

Of course, there’s a lot more to the KING of the BOX then just the surfing, with the Country Club Hotel once again hosting a night of nostalgia on the Saturday night.

Local photographer Robbie O’Brien has been shooting and documenting “Boxy” for over 40 years will be showcasing the “Best of Box” slideshow on the big screen and several more old school locals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for their performances over the years at the venue. The night will feature giveaways and live music as well.

Another highlight will be the Legends division which this year has been transformed into a Teams Challenge, with 6 surfers grouped together into 4 teams to fight out for the inaugural trophy.

The contest is a 1-day event across a weekend in late August, either 19/20 or 26/27.
