2018 Burton Automotive KING of the BOX

Box Beach, Port Stephens NSW

September 2018

After a jaw-dropping final day last year, Australia’s best surfers are gearing up to hit Port Stephens again in September for the 2018 Burton Automotive KING of the BOX annual surfing contest, and this year will be bigger than ever thanks to incredible support from the local community.

Last year’s event was mind-blowing ”, said event director Teza Mckenna.

“The waves on the final day were about as good as it gets, and more then 300 spectators braved the cold to watch South coast local Nick Squires snatch a last minute victory form local hero Mitch Dawkings”.

It’s really established itself as one of the best “little” 1-day events on the Australian circuit, and the wedging nature of the wave draws in surfers from right around the country”, he added.

In the Junior men’s division home-grown surfers like Mike Clayton-Brown & Josh Stretton will be hard to beat on local turf, but they will have their work cut out as some of Australia’s best join the list in 2018.

This year the Women’s division has bigger prize money thanks to our major sponsor Kim Burton and local surfers Elle Clayton-Brown & Jasmine Sampson will be warm favorites.

Of course, there’s a lot more to the KING of the BOX then just the surfing, with the Country Club Hotel once again hosting a night of nostalgia on the Saturday night.

Local photographer Robbie O’Brien has been shooting and documenting “Boxy” for over 40 years will be showcasing the “Best of Box V3” slideshow on the big screen and several more old school locals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for their performances over the years at the venue. The night will feature giveaways and live music as well.

Another highlight will be the Legends division which this year has been transformed into a Teams Challenge, with 6 surfers grouped together into 4 teams to fight out for the inaugural trophy.

The contest is a 1-day event across a weekend in early September, either 01/02 or 08/09.
